Debunking 5 Myths About Refurbished Computers

Whether you’re a student, a professional or a retiree, there is a refurbished computer out there that is budget-friendly and will give you the performance you need. However, there are many myths and misconceptions about refurbished computers. These myths lead people to spend more money than they need to on a computer that exceeds their everyday needs.

In this blog, we share some of the myths and misconceptions about refurbished computers and we explain why they are not true.

1. Refurbished computers are slow

This is a myth.

Before shipping a computer to you, the team at RefurbIT refurbishes them to “like new” working status. This process involves testing, reconditioning, and cleaning the computer so it runs well.  All files, data and software from the previous user is deleted.  In other words, storage is "wiped clean".  This is why,  when you receive your PC from us, you will have to activate the Windows operating system.  With a Chromebook you will have to activate the Chrome OS.

2. The technology is outdated

That is also not true.

Most RefurbIT products have SSDs instead of HDDs for storage. SSDs are faster, quieter, smaller, consume less energy, and more durable.

Many of our products also have DDR4 RAM which is more energy efficient than DDR3 RAM and allows operation at higher speeds without higher power and cooling requirements.

We also have many products that can be upgraded to Windows 11 because they have Intel processors that are 8th Gen or higher.

3. They are more likely to break down

This is not true as we ensure everything about the computer's operation is in top form before it gets to you, and if it’s not, we fix it.

Yes, it is possible that some refurbished computers might have minor scratches but that will not affect the longevity of your device.

4. It's better to buy new

We beg to differ:

  1. Refurbished computers save you money
  2. Refurbished computers are better for the environment

You’ll save money with a refurbished computer, and we frequently have sales on our products that can range from 10% off to 40% off. These sales are on top of prices that are already reduced because the models are not brand new!

There are also environmental benefits to refurbished computers; you can prevent new parts from having to be manufactured and you can avoid sending products to landfills. Humans produce 40 million tons of electronic waste every year. Read about the environmental costs of new technology in our blog.

5. They are defective or returned

The majority of computers that we purchase come from schools or are off-lease from corporations. The technology in these machines is typically only one to three years old.
